FALLAS IN VALENCIA

Las Fallas was a blast! Literally as well! It is NOT for the faint-hearted. Various firecrackers are going off continuously all over the city. Big ones, little ones, thrown in a dumpster, put in a coke can, on the street, on the sidewalk, you name it. If you can't deal with sudden loud noises, this is NOT the place for you. Fortunately, we could and Gene even got into the action by buying and setting off a few rockets and firecrackers of his own.

The Mascleta which went on every day at 2pm in the main square is beyond loud. You feel in in your chest about a block away. We heard it one day in our hotel room by the City of Arts & Sciences and it was still amazingly loud. And it goes on for about 15 minutes nonstop. We tried to get to the square to actually see it one day, but the crowd was so large, we could only stand in place about 1/4 block away and hear & feel it.

There are parades constantly, it seems, and the costumes are beautiful.

The Fallas or Ninots are a wonder. 20 feet tall and very artistic. I would imagine if you are a local, they are even more appealing since you can see that some of the characters are based on local celebrities and politicians.

The fireworks on the next to last night were unbelieveable. I don't remember seeing such a display go on for so long ever.

And finally, the final night was wonderful. There was about a 5-minute mascleta near the fallas we chose to watch. It was so loud, but so much fun to listen to and watch. And finally when the they set fire to the ninot, it was amazing how fast it went up in flames (and how fast everyone who tried to get a front row view started backing up to get away from the intense heat).

It was exactly as crazy as we expected and that's a good thing!

Madrid & Northern Spain Trip -September 2010

Eugene, I wanted to let you your recommendations for our trip to Madrid and No. Spain were excellent. We loved the Hotel Hospes in Madrid, it's convenient location and excellent service. We took advantage of the Madrid Vision Bus Tour which left across the circle from the hotel. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at El Barril de Recoletos, which was within walking distance of the hotel. Their speciality was beef....wonderful, and they also served a whole fish which looked delicious. The next day, near the Plaza Mayor, we had lunch at Casa Ballega....excellent food and service. We did eat one night at the hotel (Senzone Restaurant) and were disappointed in the food. We took the fast train to Toledo. Recommend checking the train times carefully for each day, as the schedule varies and we spent a long wait in the station (which is amazing by the way). Highly recommend the Los Quatro Tiempos restaurant in Toledo. A local recommended it to us.
We had a disappointing Italian meal at L'Espirale, which was within walking distance of our hotel. Am sure there were better choices. On our way to Santillana Del Mar, we stopped in Segovia. A must! And then went to lunch at the Asador Casa Brigante in Lerma for the roast baby lamb. Quite a treat. Then on to Santillana del Mar. We liked our hotel very much....Hotel Casa del Marques. We stopped into the Parador, and didn't think it looked as nice. It was difficult to find a good meal in Santillana del Mar....not sure why. The side trips to Valle de Cabuerniga was fabulous. We drove to Barcena Mayor and stopped for lunch in Los Tojos at a charming lodge called La Punvieja. Be sure to take the road to Carmona...the most beautiful valley I've ever seen! The next day we went to the Picos de Europa. Very cloudy, so we didn't ride the tram at Fuente De. A must....if you go to the Picos....lunch at Hotel del Oso. It also looked like a wonderful place to spend a day or two if one had the time. Drove to Bilbao, where we had arranged ahead of time (through the museum web site) for a private guide. Highly recommended. Also ate in the Bistro at the museum....some of the best food of our trip. Reservations recommended. Then on to Hondoribbia. This was probably our favorite place! We loved the Parador Emperador. Spectacular lobby, great food at breakfast, simple rooms with wonderful views. Hondoribbia is a charming town, an authentic fishing village, good restaurants, especially for tapas. Our favorite was Gran Sol. We also had fabulous tapas at La Cepa in San Sebastion, an easy drive from Hondoribbia. Took a side trip through the Basque country and ended up in St. Jean de Luz for lunch....a colorful town. All in all it was a perfect trip, and we thank you for all your input.

ONE WEEK IN CHILE

Impressions from a week in Chile

Sometimes we travel editors rely on other correspondents to cover countries we've still not visited. That was the case with me until last week when I finally made it to Chile.

The country is grappling with many familiar issues--like too much graffiti and too much plastic floating down the rivers--but overall I was impressed. This is as close as you'll get to first-world conditions in Latin America, with a great infrastructure, a transparent government, and institutions that actually work. The level of English proficiency was far beyond what I expected.

Here's the other important thing: it's hard to even tell there was an earthquake back in February. From Santiago to Valparaiso to the wine valleys, things are pretty much back to normal. (The one inconvenience was the pool patio at the W Santiago is closed until October for repairs.) So come on down! The wine is great, the skiing is great, and the Chileans are ready to welcome you with open arms

LUXURY TRAVEL LATIN AMERICA

While many European and Caribbean destinations are seeing tourism fall off a cliff, Latin America still seems to be holding up well, with some destinations still seeing year-to-year increases. I just saw this first-hand on my two-week trip to Peru. The local Casa Andina chain is on a tear opening up new hotels, but unlike in much of the rest of the world, they are actually filling them up each week. The new La Casona de Inkaterra boutique hotel in Cusco is a masterpiece and is already booked out for part of high season.

I also talked with several tour operators there that are seeing record bookings for 2009, not just in Peru, but in Argentina and Chile as well, despite the down economy all over.

Luxury travelers are apparently finding that trading down doesn't have to be unpleasant if they pick the right destination.

Heading to Latin America is just naturally a better value. Great service and facilities for far less than the old standbys.

CRUISING THE CHILEAN FJORDS

Day 1: Saturday: 11:00 HRS. Departure from Skorpios Terminal in Chinquihue, Puerto Montt, sailing through the Llanquihue Archipelago, the Gulf of Ancud and the Chiloé Archipelago. Crossing the Corcovado Gulf at midnight.

Day 2: Sunday: Navigation through the Moraleda and Ferronave channels. Arrival to Puerto Aguirre (11:00 app), a remote fishing village. Departure from Puerto Aguirre at around 13:00 hrs. Sailing through the Ferronave, Pilcomayo and Costa Channels. At around 21:30 hrs the vessel anchors in Punta Leopardos, 20 miles far from San Rafael Glacier.

Day 3: Monday: Cut through the San Rafael bay and Témpanos Channel to anchor two kilometers far from the glacier at around 09:00 hrs. Excursions in motorboats around the multicolored glaciers, if the weather allows to. In the afternoon, the vessel moves closer to the glacier. Departure from the Glacier to the Quitralco Fjord in the evening.

Day 4: Tuesday: At Quitralco Fjord the passengers can enjoy the thermal baths in indoor and/or outdoor pools. Excursions in motorboats around the Fjord are done during the morning. In the evening, departure to Chiloé sailing through the Moraleda and Pérez Norte Channels.

Day 1 – Buenos Aires
Arrival at Ezeiza internacional airport. Reception and transfer to the Hotel. In the afternoon, visit to the most elegant South American city. The tour begins in Avenida 9 de Julio.
On the way you will see Plaza de la República, place where the Obelisk and the Colón theatre (Opera Theatre) are erected. Then you will go through Avenida de Mayo and will reach Plaza de Mayo, scene of the most important demonstrations and political activity of the country.

Day 2 – Buenos Aires / Puerto Madryn
Breakfast. Morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport to take the flight to Trelew. Arrival and transfer to Puerto Madryn. Accomodation and dinner at restaurant.

Day 3 – Puerto Madryn
Continental breakfast. Full day tour to Península Valdés passing by the Ameghino Isthmus located between Nuevo and San José gulfs. You will visit Puerto Pirámide and the sea lion rookery. What you cannot miss is the whale watching boat excursion (available from June to November). Afterwards you will continue to Punta Delgada to have lunch and see the significant sea lion rookery of the region. Then you will go to Caleta Valdés to watch the sea elephant rookery. Return. Day 4 – Puerto Madryn / Ushuaia
Breakfast. Departure from Puerto Madryn to Punta Tombo fauna reserve and to the largest Magellan penguin colony in the continent. Long walk along the interpretative paths drawn among the nests of more than 500 000 Magellan penguins that gather in this colony every year. A tour around the reserve will let you appreciate, within less than a meter distance, the funny way of walking of these sea birds that will curiously approach you. Day 5 -- Ushuaia
Breakfast. Departure to Tierra del Fuego national park, located 12 km (7.5 miles) away from the city. This park constitutes a natural reserve of typical species of the andean-patagonean forest spread over an area of 63 000 hectares (155 500 acres). Before entering the national park you will board the train to the end of the world and will enjoy an unforgettable trip along the original terrain where the old prisoners’ train ran until 1947 for their expeditions into the national park, in search of wood for heating. The most outstanding feature of the park is Lapataia bay, the southernmost tip of the continent, with a wonderful view of the Beagle channel. Here, the old inhabitants of the area have left their testimony in the “concheros”, incredible archaeological deposits. Return to the hotel. Dinner and accommodation.

Day 6 – Ushuaia / El Calafate
Breakfast. Departure to visit the city and the end of the world museum. The city of Ushuaia, with around 55 000 inhabitants, is placed in the center of a picturesque scenario in front of the bay and the Beagle channel. Ushuaia is the southernmost city of the southern hemisphere. A short tour will show you the mixture of architectonic styles. The old wooden houses covered with corrugated plate-roofs mixed up with the new cement and iron buildings. Transfer to the airport to board the flight to El Calafate. Transfer to the hotel. Day 7 – El Calafate
Breakfast. Departure to Puerto Bandera, 50 km away from the city, to board the catamaran to navigate the Argentino lake surrounded by hundreds of icebergs and enjoy a full day lake excursion to the Upsala glacier -the largest of the southern hemisphere with walls that vary between 60 to 80 meters (196 to 262 feet) and an area of 595 Km2 (229 sq. miles)- the Onelli bay and finally the Spegazzini glacier. Day 8--El Calafate

Itinerary
Day 1: CUSCO – CRUZPATA – SALKANTAYPAMPA.
We leave Cusco early (06.30) and drive, to the village of Mollepata a nice Indian Village situated in a citrus growing area at a subtropical 2803 m. We may have time to visit the Inka Archaeological site of Limatambo (Tarawasi) one of the nicest buildings in the region before getting to Mollepata.
We begin our trek to CRUZ PATA , meeting with the mule handlers who will accompany us on our trek. a spectacular location overlooking the deep valley of the Rio Apurimac. We will arrive to Challacancha for Lunch.
We then begin a slow ascent to our camp at Salkantaypampa near the tiny settlement of Soraypampa. Views of the mountain Humantay (5917 metres) spur us on, and just before our camp the majestic Salkantay appears. We camp at 4000 metres, with possible night time temperatures of 0-40c. ( L-D)

Day 2: SALKANTAYPAMPA – QOLLPAPAMPA
Today it will be a long journey , we depart at 06:am This is approximately 8 hours walk .
We hike in close proximity to the glacial moraine of Salkantay (4500m) from and the views are astounding, landscape is beautiful .
We continue and descending to Huaracmachay for a delicious lunch . In this area we can appreciate some portions of Inka Trail (cobbled) . In the afternoon we descend to our campsite at Qollpapampa . From this area onwards we may encounter herders with their alpacas and llamas. (B-L-D)

Day 3: QOLLPAPAMPA - LUCMACHAYOC

After breakfast we will descend through a narrow path toward the banks of the River Cachora (6 hours Walking)
This day we will enjoy a warmer and humid climate, at this altitude there is a marked change in the flora and fauna, it will be good use light suit .. The vegetation begins to change in this area, becoming more verdant and preparing us for the subtropical foliage to come.
Near this area we can find small puddles of thermal waters. Gorgeous scenery ,different kinds of trees ,plants ,flowers we can appreciate a wonderful waterfall with three falls..
we will arrive to PLAYA site to enjoy a delicious Lunch.

In the afternoon we continue close to the banks of the river and we will pass SAHUAYACO a small village less of 20 families. Later we arrive to our campsite at Lucmachayoc (B-L-D)

Day 4: LUCMACHAYOC – HYDRO 5 hours walking
Alter Breakfast we Start walking at 7.30 AM, descending and passing Coffe ,bananas trees , and other fruits … fields. we will pass close to Llactapata ,these ruins are the last on the trail , and their plunging terraces covered by vegetation provide a beautiful spot for a break from hiking. From this point we can sight Machupicchu in the distance..
We continue close to the banks of Aobamba river ,in this point we have lunch and say good bye to our muleteers.
After lunch we finally walk one hour more to the next rail station in order to aboard our train to Aguas Calientes town.. Accommodation in a Hostal ..hot water and a good bed await us . (B-L)

Day 5: MACHUPICCHU - CUSCO

South America is one of the least-known areas in the world, as well as one of the least explored. Traveling to South America promises an unforgettable trip and a grand experience.

The vast and remote region is centered along the Andes mountain range and the Patagonia area. It is a region open to our imagination, with much to discover: volcanoes, salt flats, 1000-year-old forests, lakes and rivers. But at the same time South America offers a journey through history, as the cultures that originated here thousands of years ago have maintained their ways to this day. For this trip, guests arrive at San Pedro de Atacama where, gradually and through explorations at different altitudes, they acclimatize themselves in order to continue the trip in the morning of Day 5.

Guests arrive at the Salar de Uyuni after 2 days of travel across the altiplano, and they remain there for 2 more days. The Salar de Uyuni is one of the largest and highest salt flats in the world. The last 2 days are spent traveling from Bolivia to the Chilean altiplano, arriving at Iquique on Day 10.

The travesía to these remote and attractive destinations constitutes perhaps one of the greatest travel experiences one can have.The San Pedro oasis in the midst of the Atacama Desert is undoubtedly a last frontier. In spite of its aridity and extravagance, it is an environment where man can live while conserving its large spaces.The altiplano reaches heights over 3,600 meters (11,800 ft.) and at its furthest point, the Salar de Uyuni, is a continuation of the Atacama in that, it provokes the imagination and provides romantic memories of purity and vastness while offering little hope of survival or a place to set down roots. If the driest desert symbolizes the end of habitable land, the altiplano appears as another world: an enigma more than an opportunity; food for thought, not for the stomach.

Location

The trip begins in San Pedro de Atacama and continues to Bolivia, entering at the Sur Lípez, at the extreme southwest of the country, and then traveling past the majestic line of volcanoes that begins with Volcano Licancabur. The trip continues through the Bolivian altiplano at 3,600 to 4,300 meters altitude, crossing geothermal fields, lakes and old mines, until reaching the Salar de Uyuni which is situated between 20 and 21 degrees latitude South, and 68 degrees longitude West, with a surface of more than 10,000 km squared. This zone is located within the Potosí province. As we travel towards Chile, we cross the Salar de Coipasa at 19 degrees South, arriving at the Colchane border and the Chilean town Enquelga in the Isluga National Park. Iquique is located at 20 degrees South and 66 degrees West.

How to arrive

Fly to Santiago on an international flight, and connect with a national flight to Calama, which take about 2 ½ hours from Santiago. explora shuttle takes guests by van to explora en Atacama hotel, a 1 hour trip. After completing the trip across the Bolivian altiplano, our journey concludes at the Chilean city Iquique, where guests can take a 2 ½ hour flight to Santiago. DAY 1
Welcome at Juliaca Airport by our Guest Services representative and transfer to Puno Lake Port to board a boat to begin your excursion to the floating reed islands of the Uros, inhabited by local tribe descendants of one of the most ancient cultures of the continent, living in an archipelago of more than 40 man-made reed islands on the Lake, a few kilometers away from the lodge-refuge. Learn how natives live by catching fish like pejerreyes and carachis, using boats also made of reeds which are abundant in the National Reserve of Titicaca Lake. The man-made islands are made out of totora reeds, with patience and constant re-filling, until they form a thick base called Khili where they build their rustic huts also made of same material. Check-in upon arrival at the Lodge, rest and enjoy the scenery as you acclimatize. Lunch is based on the region’s local cuisine with superb ingredients and is served from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm. We recommend you to have a siesta, take it easy and drink plenty of liquids in order to get used to the altitude. Enjoy tea time and at 3:30 pm and join an excursion rowing through the reeds on the lake near the hotel, where you can observe interesting endemic birds, striking landscapes of the unique highlands geography, its fauna and the totora reeds with different colors. Then, return to the hotel for lunch.
Enjoy sunset cocktails from the panoramic terraces overlooking the lake. Dinner is served in the Main Dining room from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Then, you may luxuriate in your appointed suite or join with other guests and interpreters to talk about your highlands experience.

DAY 2
After rising at the hour that suits you enjoy breakfast in bed or in the lake-view dining room, with choices of a variety of fresh fruit, local cereals and products, or if you wish, join the morning excursion to Taquile Island. Taquile is considered the most interesting island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca, located in front of the Chucuito Peninsula. The Taquile people of Quechua origin, as opposed to the majority of region’s locals who are of Aymara origin, live at 4,000 meters above sea level (13,000 ft). You may get to know their way of life and experiences. As formerly part of the Inca Empire, you may also see some archaeological remains in the island, such as stone quarters, doors, windows and pathways on the peak of its mountain, where you can also view the impressive panorama of Lake Titicaca and the snow covered mountains of Cordillera Real. Due to the thermal effect of the lake on the weather which provides more oxygen to the atmosphere and warmer temperatures, the island enjoys a favorable micro-climate for agriculture, producing crops which don’t normally grow at these altitudes. As you walk around the island, you will see local men knitting outdoors, one of the finest knitted handicrafts in Peru. Return for lunch and siesta at the hotel. After tea time, move on to your next excursion towards Socca Beach, east of the lodge-refuge, to visit the rustic town community of Socca, through the broad sandy shores of the Lake Titicaca, between wetlands and farms where you can appreciate the agricultural practices of the locals and know the customs. Take pleasure at the magnificent scenery around the highest navigable lake of the world; watch the idyllic sunset and the first stars coming out as night sets in. Upon return to the hotel, continue to enjoy the intense sunset. At 6:30 pm you may enjoy a Cocktail. Dinner is served from 7:30 pm. Then, overnight at your luxurious lake-view suite.

DAY 3

BARCELONA’S ICONIC SAGRADA FAMILIA TO FINALLY BE ROOFED

Gaudí’s Masterpiece Ever Closer to Completion

Barcelona, SPAIN, July 10, 2008 - Barcelona’s emblematic, yet incomplete monument, La Sagrada Familia will soon receive a roof. It has been 125 years since architectural genius Antoni Gaudí took on the project in 1883 (though 126 years since the first stone was laid). Welcoming over two million visitors annually, the Cathedral of La Sagrada Familia is now expected to be completely roofed by 2010, when work on the vaults of the transepts and apse will be concluded. Though not quite the finishing touch, this will mark an important milestone in the life of the Cathedral, as it will finally be able to welcome religious observances and cultural events within its walls.
Gaudí is the most renowned exponent of the architectural and artistic movement known as Modernisme, or Catalan Art Nouveau, which flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. UNESCO first recognized Gaudí’s accomplishments in 1984 when it declared several of his structures as World Heritage Sites. Subsequently in 2005, that was expanded to include portions of the Sagrada Familia completed during his lifetime.
The Cathedral is a breathtaking vision come to life of Gaudí’s architectural, artistic and spiritual philosophies. Inspired by Gothic architecture, Gaudí believed he could surpass what he perceived as its architectural weaknesses. Though beautiful, the parts of a Gothic cathedral were too interdependent, the destruction of one part could lead to the destruction of the whole, and major structural supports, like flying buttresses, were too vulnerable, as they were constructed outside of protective walls. Gaudí embraced modern technological innovations and developed complex inverted weight studies to develop his plans for the Sagrada Familia. Additionally, drawing on his love of nature, he developed columns that tilted like trees and forked at the top like branches. Upon entering the nave and as light filters in from its stained glass windows, visitors have the sensation of walking under a forest’s canopy. For Gaudí, not only the decoration, but the actual structure of the church should reflect religious symbolism. The Cathedral’s stunning silhouette with its many towers has become Barcelona’s icon and when completed, is destined to have 18 towers, representing the twelve apostles, the four evangelicals and Mary and Jesus.
Gaudí obsessively dedicated the last forty years of his life to his masterpiece, but did so with utmost patience. Since its beginnings, the Sagrada Familia has been funded by private donations (and in recent times by entrance fees). Gaudí carefully planned the building to be completed in stages by subsequent generations, and in fact, never expected to see his opus magnum finished. Rather, as he put it, his client was not in a rush, since God had all the time in the world.
Today, many others have dedicated large portions of their lives to carrying out his vision. The artist Josep Maria Subirachs has worked for the past twenty years in creating sculptures for the Passion Façade. The current chief architect, Jordi Bonet, has spearheaded the works for over twenty years. Bonet, an octogenarian, proclaims that he will continue to do so as long as he remains able to climb the Cathedral’s many stairs. He follows in the footsteps of his own father who worked on the project through 1983. Bonet believes, however, that like Gaudí and his own father, he will not see the Sagrada Familia completed.
The current prediction is that the crowning element of the Sagrada Familia, the central tower (The Tower of Jesus), which is to measure over 550 feet, will be finished in 2025.

SPAIN & PORTUGAL BUS TOUR

We had an amazing time! The tour was well planned and everything went smoothly. I think our favorite time was 3 nights in Lisbon- it is beautiful there and we had plenty of time to relax and enjoy the city. Everything else seemed to go too fast. None of us enjoyed the trip to Fatima and I wish we'd have skipped it and slept in that day. Getting up so early everyday started to take a toll on all of us.Costa Del Sol was beautiful and I could have stayed there for a week! Our favorite hotel was Los Angeles in Granada. Absolutely perfect. If you are interested, I posted reviews for each hotel at tripadvisor.com.It was nice to have the 3 nights added on at the end to just relax before traveling again. The airport transfer was seemless and they even had a booster seat ready in the van for my 4 year old.It was a great trip and we made lots of memories with the kids. Even though the tour was exhausting at times and we all got tired of getting back on the bus, I know we saw and learned much more than we would have on our own. When we were on our own time we tended to spend too much time sitting at the outdoor cafes drinking cervezas and cafe con leche. :)Thanks for all of your efforts.I'll attach a picture of the 8 of us in Cordoba.Sincerely

Santa Alicia Winery
In 1954, on the fertile land close to the capital of Chile, was founded the vineyard "Houses of Pirque" that today is identified as "Santa Alicia". After half a century and four generations, the original owner family has turned these vineyards in the best example of love for the land and perfection in the quality of its products. The high quality of its wines makes possible to export 100% of the production to international markets where Holland is the first destination.

Visits are scheduled at 10:00 a. m., 12:30 p. m. and 3:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. The visit is including four different wines to taste which are served together with a sort of local cheeses. You also have the opportunity to admire local artisans that works, in barrels and ceramics, inspired in the winemaking art.
